Get What You Want Now

Now and then you need a kick in the ass to get it together. I talked with a friend the other day, and we agreed that we give great advice. I realize that sounds pretty shallow, but we also agreed we are really bad at taking advice.

We all know the right things to do, we simply struggle to break the emotional connection that prevents logical decision-making. You are in luck today buddy, because I don’t know you! Which means I have no emotional connection to your issues, but I care enough to share some quality info with you.

Critical thinking is the difference between having a plan and winging it. It can be the difference between success and failure. Too often, we are reactionary, rather than strategic. Strategy, is the rationale that guides the decisions of every successful critical thinker. If you allow your perception to evolve, you will recognize new possibilities. Why bother to share this info today?

My hope is to provide my readers with a means to implement critical thinking in a real way. It’s easy to say what you want to do, but enacting those desires can be difficult. Make time to create a plan of action. Planning is not a waste of time. Account for potential obstacles because things can and will go wrong. Meanwhile, you are more prepared for the unknown.

Be careful not to mistake inactivity for planning. Imagining what could go wrong, and being paralyzed by uncertainty is the opposite of planning. Determine if you are stalling by examining your plans for actionable steps. Think about contingencies and move forward.

The abstract nature of this conversation is my way of accounting for the variety of goals you may have. Think about what you want, imagine what you need to begin, and do it. Think about what you need to happen first, second, third… in other words, dissect your goals into their smaller components and complete them one by one. Everyone can benefit from chunking objectives into manageable goals.

Let go of those old thought patterns. Easier said than done, I know, but start at the beginning and keep moving forward. If you can correct one thing that consistently derails you, the second thing will be much easier. Check yourself, avoid being your own worst enemy. Are your reactions commensurate with your situation? If the answer is ever no, you know what to do.

Pick one person who exhibits three intellectual traits you want for yourself and understand how they own and embody those characteristics. After you understand how they leverage those skills, try to see how you can employ them personally. You may screw up the first couple of attempts, but the fact that you are measuring your success is an accomplishment in itself.
