NaNoWriMo is Over

Now that the mad dash to 50k is over, what comes next?

November is over and that means that the mad dash to 50,000 words known as NaNoWriMo is over for another year.

If you won, congratulations!

If you didn’t win but you got any words at all down during November, congratulations!

If you didn’t participate in NaNo at all but are still writing, congratulations to you too!

Writing is hard, so we need to celebrate every single achievement no matter how small. So now that all that craziness is over, what comes next?

Okay, maybe this one is just me but I hit 50,000 words and I’m no where near done with my science fiction/romance that I’ve been working on through November. If 50,000 words encompasses your entire story, feel free to skip this step, but I’ve got to finish mine.

I don’t care if you wrote five, 5,000 or 50,000 words. If you put words on paper, celebrate that! Treat yourself!

I bought myself a Cara Dune (from The Mandalorian) Funko Pop because she’s awesome, but do whatever you enjoy. (Yes, I know I haven’t finished step one yet. Point still stands.) Whatever tickles your fancy as long as it’s a treat. Celebrate!

I don’t know about you, but I can’t go back and edit a fresh manuscript as soon as it is finished. The exact amount of time you should wait before you start editing varies depending on who you ask, but I usually try to give it at least a couple of weeks before you dive back in and try to shape that super rough first draft into something more manageable.

Apparently Hemingway allegedly said something along the lines of “write drunk, edit sober” but I find that when you’re getting ready to edit…
