Show me that place where we can glow where stars will fall like winter snow. The space where sadness has no place where tears no longer trace your face and where our dreams can clearly grow. There…

Things The Elderly Can Do During Lockdown

We are living in unprecedented times. Everyone has been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. The ones who seem to be most affected by the stay at home orders, the quarantines and the lockdowns implemented around the world seem to be the elderly. Already affected by chronic illness and limited mobility, the elderly are one of the high-risk dynamics. But that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve to have their physical and mental health be looked after.

While it may seem easy to wallow in your dismay, there’s plenty of activities that can distract you from the news stream. The world will eventually return to normal. You’ll want to keep sane and prepared during this difficult time. Here are some things seniors can do during the lockdown.

Studies show that those who journal have larger vocabularies, better critical thinking skills, and better mental health. During a time like this, it’s important that you take a little time for self-reflection, especially if you’re feeling grief, anxiety, or anger. If self-reflection feels like too much at the moment, remember that you’re part of a historical event. It’ll be an important tome to look back on in the coming years.

Reading increases memory retention and creates new synapses in the brain. There are numerous studies that show the benefits of reading, but reading is very time-consuming. Now that you have all this time on your hands, try reading five books you’ve always wanted to. Maybe you’ll find a new author or learn something new.

Now would be a good time to get rid of any clothes that don’t fit or spark joy. That dress you wore once? Jeans that just don’t fit the same way they used to? Toss it! Make a donation pile for those less fortunate. Kond-ing your wardrobe will lessen the number of things you’ll have to account for!

Now more than ever, you have the ability to learn a new skill online. Always wanted to learn to code? Want to start up that crocheting project? Boot up your laptop and Google away. There are so many free resources online, you won’t have to open your wallet to learn. Cross something off your bucket list or maybe fill out your resume!

They may seem far away but with the advent of Facetime and Skype, it’s easier than ever to “hang out” with your friends without them physically being there. It’s important to maintain contact with your friends. Speaking with your friends can help ward off the feeling of cabin fever. Plan a game night, or perhaps an online sewing circle. It’s not that different from being with your friends in real life!

Take a bubble bath, put on a face mask, take a nap. Do whatever it is you need to feel safe and secure. Be sure to clean yourself, drink water, and eat something healthy. It’s important for you to stay healthy and give your immune system a fighting chance!

Due to staying at home orders, there are limited opportunities for exercise. But in many cases, exercise is allowed as an excuse to go outside. Now it’s the perfect time for a hike or perhaps a long nature walk. Take pictures of the wildlife you observe! Take notes of the local fauna. Maybe you’ll find something you’ve never seen before!
