I Conquered My Fear Of Open Spaces With Star Gazing

Once upon a time I was severely agoraphobic. For years I had a terror of strange spaces. I was limited to my house, my yard, my car, and my place of work. If I attempted to break this tight little…

Weeknotes 2020.33

Busy week this week. Monday was a bit of a write-off, project wise, because of some live-service issues that needed urgent attention.

The rest of the week was productive, but meeting heavy. I didn’t write any significant code this week, but I did a lot of planning. We’ve got a big project starting next week, and there were conflicting desires to focus on the letter of the scope or the spirit. I was in favour of the spirit, as I’m confident that we can deliver something great and on-budget. Thankfully, it looks like that’s the way things are going. Will depend a lot on client’s opinions in meetings next week, though.

One very annoying thing was having someone tell me that using git flow was a step backwards because they currently use a trunk-based development approach, and linked me to some Google whitepaper so I could learn more. Bull shit. Yeah, a trunk-based approach with CD can be really efficient, but what you’ve been doing is merging broken code to master then accidentally deploying it to production and causing huge amounts of failure demand.

Explanatory diagram I made for my team

The devs I’m working with all seem great, and are totally on board with the change, and this person is a contractor who’s now left, but man.. that annoyed me.

Overall, I’ve been a bit grumpy, but for good reason, and the grumpiness has been in aid of improvement. I’ve spent my grumpy tokens for a few months now, so need to GSD.

New camera lens

I’ve been playing with Yahoo Auctions Japan a lot this week, ordered some fun camera lenses. One in particular I was the only bidder until right at the end. A bit frustrating, as I ended up spending 3x what I thought I was going to, but it’ll still be a good deal. Including shipping, VAT and Duty it should come to £140 or so for a Pentax-A 645 120mm F4 Macro lens. That’s a fair price, I’d probably expect to pay that or slightly higher if I got it from eBay. It’s a beast, and I’ll need a converter to run it on my K mount DSLR, but it should be good for photos of bumblebees.
