Bacteria is good for you? Who knew?

Bacteria are everywhere; it’s they’re around your house, it’s on your clothing and it’s inside of you. The human body naturally produces bacteria that aid in digestion, strengthen our immune system, and more. These naturally-produced, “good” bacteria are called probiotics.

It’s fair to ask why we should care about little microorganisms that live inside of us, because they do not affect us on a day-to-day basis. We should care because probiotics can help and treat numerous illness and infections; however, their effectiveness is not talked about as much as it should be. Maybe, because people do not like think about bacteria living inside them.

This topic may seem irrelevant to people younger than age of 50, but I’m a 20-year-old girl with an incredibly weak immune system who has to monitor her weekly probiotic intake. Making sure you get your daily probiotic intake is just as important as making sure you get your daily dose of vitamins, protein, fat, etc.

Some examples are…

Lactobacillus Acidophilus — this is the most common strain of probiotic that is consumed by people. It is extremely helpful in digestion as well as vaginal health, and helps prevent acne and diarrhea.

Bifidobacterium Bifidum — this probiotic promotes overall protection against disease and helps relieve gastrointestinal problems.

Streptococcus Thermophilus — This strain can help with skin protection and regeneration with time.Link

Some yogurt brands that contain probiotics are Chobani, Yoplait, Stonyfield, and Dannon. Many types of greek yogurt have these live culture bacteria. You can also opt to take a daily probiotic dietary supplement, but only with the recommendation of a health care physician.

Personally, I like to get my daily dose of probiotics through the food I eat. Every morning I will eat probiotic yogurt for breakfast. My favorite type of probiotic yogurt is Chobani’s nonfat greek yogurt. Most days I will also add honey and fruit to the yogurt to make it taste better, and there are a lot benefits of eating honey and fruit on a daily basis. In the afternoons, I like to drink teas that contain probiotics because they give me a boost of energy and add to my daily intake of these probiotics.

Research on probiotics and their value are still fairly new, so most articles online have differing opinions regarding them. To figure out whether you should add probiotics to your diet talk to your healthcare provide for advice.

In my experience, probiotics really do help. The most notable effects occur when I don’t eat my probiotic food for multiple days and come down with a cold. If you are someone who is prone to infection and illness, then eating probiotic food may help strengthen your immune system and leave you free to live your life.
