New semester- the first class of Environmental Graphics, sat in front of the laptop. It’s a new teacher, let’s see…

Well, the blogs gonna be graded, so I’m going to be good and smiley. The blogs gonna be mostly about what we did in class, some questions we discussed, and what my thought on them are.

We were told to re-watch Helvetica (2007), the movie. It’s a great one, I would recommend it to everyone. To those who don’t know, it’s a movie entirely on a typeface called Helvetica by filmmaker Gary Hustwit. I did wonder what is its relevance to this course, and I mean we are in a design school, we saw it within the first few days of the orientation. Why see it again? Now, that I think about it, it is pretty relevant (and that’s not cause I want to find connections everywhere) Helvetica is not just a typeface anymore, it’s the air you breathe, so much prevalent it is, in the environment. It’s just so good. People love Helvetica and hate Helvetica. But back to its relevance, we see stills of Helvetica in action, on the streets, on billboards, on posters, everywhere. And that’s what it has become- Environment.

We also had a pretty heated (the only one in the entire duration of the course wherein pretty much everyone contributed) discussion on Graphic design vs Art. Is the difference in intention? Money? Content? I’m still on the fence about this.

Why are school buses painted yellow? Why are army buses painted green? Identification- duh! No, no, no, its aspiration value. I agree. I also wondered, how come these guys got to go to school in buses and we beggars on foot (my school was a 5 min walk from my house). It created jealousy and inferiority within me. I wondered what the children on the bus thought? Snobbish brats.

We discussed very radical things in class that I thought no teacher should attempt without proper planning.

Text is used in places where it’s necessary, like fire safety instructions and the Vedic texts. (Agreed)

There are differently-abled people in the world, people who don’t understand the language, people who are plain illiterate. (Agreed)

Then, by using text for such important situations, aren’t we denying them something big, like getting out of the house when it’s on fire or fighting for common people’s rights in ancient India, where brahmins thought they were gods. Nah, it’s just common sense to get out of the house when it’s on fire.
