A sentiment analysis of BTS songs

One of the reasons why BTS has such passionate fanbase is because their lyrics contain personal depth and universal messages that anyone, no matter what age, race or gender, can relate to. Their songs address mental health, pursuing one’s dreams to managing expectations from society and, perhaps most importantly, yourself. From the beginning, their company, Big Hit Entertainment, encouraged BTS to write and produce songs that reflect their emotions and thoughts. In fact, Big Hit’s motto is “music & artist for healing.” Their approach is different from other Korean entertainment companies where in-house producers feed their artists with songs to sing and perform, which contributes to why “kpop” and the idol industry have negative connotations of being a manufactured system. That’s a story for another time.

VADER indicates how negative or positive a given text is and returns a negative, neutral, positive and compound score. The negative, neutral and positive scores indicates what percentage of the given text falls into each category and sums up to 1. A compound score >= 0.05 is positive, a score <= -0.05 is negative and a score between -0.05 and 0.05 is neutral.

The great thing about VADER is that it also considers punctuations, modifiers, emojis and online abbreviations (ie: lol, smh) into its sentiment scoring, which makes it particularly useful for analyzing social media text, such as tweets.

Notice how the changes in the sentence influenced the compound score. The additional :( made the compound score even more negative, which indicates a stronger negative sentiment.

Before I began analyzing the songs in Jupyter notebook, I have a folder with each BTS song as a txt file. The songs are originally in Korean so I got the English translation from Genius.com and copied it into Sublime to make the txt files.

Some takeaways in my little exercise:
