Rising Music Stars Triple Charm On The Five Things You Need To Shine In The Music Industry

An Interview With Ming Zhao

As a part of our interview series with leaders, stars, and rising stars in the music industry, we had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Triple Charm.

Dubbed as a female Hanson 20 years later with the performance skills of Blackpink. This Gen-Z singer-songwriter trio of Latin descent Triple Charm will leave their catchy hooks and smooth harmonies stuck in your head.

Channeling the iconic pop groups that once put Orlando on the music map, the sister trio has exploded onto the social media scene by amassing over 2 million fans in the last 6 months with their viral singing videos, dance moves and iconic fashion.

As the girls would say, “We’re 3 sisters just doing what we love.” Their music is sure to leave you happy, inspired, and ready to get up on your feet!

Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we dive in, our readers would love to learn a bit about your “origin story”. Can you tell us the story of how you grew up?

Hi everyone! We’re Amalia, Raena and Gabriella also known as Triple Charm. Three sisters from Orlando, Florida who love to sing, dance, and create content together! We officially formed our group in 2018, but we’ve been performing together ever since we can remember. We all started dancing around age 2 and we practically grew up in the dance studio. Our first performance as a trio was when we were 5, 4 and 2 years old. We danced to “We Are Family” from Alvin and the Chipmunks for a competition, and we haven’t stopped performing since!

Can you share a story with us about what brought you to this specific career path?

Gabriella: We formed Triple Charm in 2018, initially for a competition called the World Championships of Performing Arts. Our vocal coach invited Amalia to compete and represent the USA. Our mom said, “Amalia can go, only if she can bring her sisters.” Raena and I had no experience singing, but we thought it would be fun. So, our vocal coach started training us and got us ready for the competition in less than 11 months. We all worked hard to develop our voices and build up our stamina so that we could sing and dance at the same time. We even turned our living room into a studio space by moving all the furniture out and covering the wall with mirrors. Needless to say, we were all very committed! As we were practicing for that competition, we realized how much we loved working and performing together. It felt like what we were meant to do, and the rest is history!

Can you tell us the most interesting story that happened to you since you began your career?

Amalia: We were at Disney Springs and Raena was rushing to get to a friend’s birthday party on time. As we’re walking, we heard a girl call our names. We looked over, kind of confused at first. We were thinking “do we know you from somewhere?” Then she said she recognized us from Instagram and was a big fan! We got to talk to her and take a picture. It was so nice, and we couldn’t stop talking about it the rest of the night. The first time we got recognized in public was definitely a memorable moment. Although Raena was late to the party, she didn’t mind, it was a great experience!

It has been said that our mistakes can be our greatest teachers. Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

Raena: The funniest mistake we made when we first started out, was forgetting our outfits for a performance video, at home. Luckily our house was only about a half hour away from the set, so we were able to go back and get them. The lesson we learned is to make sure you have everything you need before you leave.

What are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you are working on now?

Triple Charm: For the past few months we have been working on our new single, “Don’t Need a Reason” coming out this September! This song is very different from anything we’ve done before and the whole writing process has been really fun and exciting. We wanted to create a song to connect with our Latin culture and this one is heavily inspired by the days we would spend at our Abuela’s house watching telenovelas and dancing to Latin music. We can’t wait for you all to hear it!

We are very interested in diversity in the entertainment industry. Can you share three reasons with our readers about why you think it’s important to have diversity represented in music, film, and television? How can that potentially affect our culture?

Triple Charm: Music, film and television are such influential parts of our society, which makes diversity in the entertainment industry crucial. It’s so important to hear new perspectives and highlight voices that haven’t always been heard. Not only does it expand our horizons, but it also allows others to feel valued and included. Also, we should all have relatable role models to look up to. The more on-screen representation, the more people will be able to connect with who they see and feel empowered. Overall, we think diversity makes art and the world a better place.

What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why? Please share a story or example for each.

Amalia: I wish someone would have told me when I first started, to remember to live in the moment. This is something I really try to do now, but when we first started, I was so focused on the future and where we wanted to be, that sometimes I forgot how amazing the place that we were already in actually was!

Raena: I wish someone would’ve told me that it’s better to try my best and not to focus on trying to be perfect. When I first started songwriting, I thought I wasn’t very good at it, so I barely wrote any lyrics. It took me time to practice and realize that my starting point isn’t gonna be where I would end up, and that’s all part of the journey. Once I let go of the fear that was holding me back, I started enjoying the process and getting better overtime. Now, I absolutely love songwriting, learning and growing as an artist. It’s one of my favorite activities!

Gabriella: I wish someone told me when I first started, that you don’t have to focus on just one thing. When we first started creating content, I didn’t make time for other things that I love, like ballet, sewing or even singing. But now I’ve learned how to balance it all much better.

Amalia: I wish someone would have told me to just trust the process. When I was younger, I worked as an actress in professional theater, and at one point, made it to a final callback on Broadway, but didn’t get the role. I remember feeling so upset and defeated but I realize now that everything happens for a reason. If I would have gotten that role, it’s possible that we would have never formed Triple Charm. Each moment I’ve been through has led to this, and I wouldn’t change a thing!

Raena: I wish someone would have told me to speak up. I remember our first time in the recording studio, I would get nervous, and hold back my opinion. Now, I make sure that I share my thoughts, and don’t leave anything unsaid. I think it just comes with time and getting more confident.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

The biggest thing we would recommend is to create content that you love and that feels authentic to you. Staying consistent is so much easier when you’re having fun, being true to yourself and in the end, it will shine through your work.

You are people of enormous influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-)

Triple Charm: That’s an interesting question. There are so many answers to that, but above all we think finding your own happiness is the most important thing you can do for yourself. Basically, a movement to CHOOSE joy. Sometimes you can’t control what happens to you, but you can control how you let it affect you. If everyone worked on being their best selves and focused on the positive, we think the world would shine a little brighter and be a better place.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

Amalia: We wouldn’t be here without our amazing vocal coach Karen. I started working with Karen when I was 6 years old. She has been with us every step of the way. She’s taught us everything we know about music theory, singing, and playing the piano. She was there when we formed Triple Charm and released each one of our songs. We are extremely grateful for her support and always look forward to our weekly lessons.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

Triple Charm: A quote we live by is “Don’t Call it a Dream, Call it a Plan.” We discovered this quote when we first formed Triple Charm, and it’s something we always carry with us. Performing together is what we’ve wanted to do our whole lives and we are big believers that you can do anything you set your mind to. A dream doesn’t become a reality unless you set goals, practice, and work towards it. That’s how we’ve gotten to where we are today!

Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this, especially if we tag them. :)

Triple Charm: Yes, we would love to have brunch with Meghan Trainor! When we first formed Triple Charm, she was one of our biggest inspirations. We love how positive and empowering her music is. She is an amazing songwriter, and we’d love to learn from her or maybe even write a song together one day in the future. So, Meghan, if you read this, hit us up!
