New Salford paper scores a like from Becks

It might only be a few weeks old but a new city newspaper is already grabbing the attention of some famous faces.

Salford City News launched at the end of January as part of a raft of new launches by Newsquest, one of the UK’s biggest regional publishers.

This week the paid-for weekly splashed on the exploits of Salford City FC’s triumphant march to Wembley in the EFL Trophy after a dramatic semi-final penalty shootout win over Newport County on Thursday night.

The front page, featuring the headline ‘Going to Wembley’ above the players celebrating at full time, was shared on Instagram where it generated thousands of interactions, including likes from football legends David Beckham and Paul Scholes.

They follow the likes of Happy Monday’s singer Shaun Ryder and New Order star Peter Hook, who both featured in the launch of the paper.

Newsquest group editor for Lancashire and Greater Manchester Karl Holbrook, who designed the front page, said: “It’s amazing to see what kind of response we’re getting at such an early stage — we’re only four weeks in and to get likes from David Beckham and Paul Scholes on social media is just the icing on the cake.

“We are really proud of this product and it’s really heart-warming to see people take to it the way they have right from the start.

“As a city, Salford has been denigrated or ignored by the media in recent years with too much focus on the negative. We are determined to change that by really celebrating all that’s great about this proud city, from it’s fast-growing football and rugby clubs to proud people across Salford who call it home.”

Salford City News, which is published every Friday with a cover price of 80p, features four pages on the Ammies’ historic win. The club now faces Portsmouth in the final at Wembley in April.

Karl said: “Next week we’re planning an eight-page Road to Wembley supplement looking at how they got to this point.

“And then it’s all eyes on Wembley. We can’t wait.”

As well as coverage of Salford City FC’s penalty win, this week’s 64-page edition also features an exclusive big interview with Salford-born BetFred billionaire Fred Done on his love of the city.

Salford City News is one of two Newsquest titles that launched in January, the other being a new Teeside edition of the Northern Echo.

In its first edition, Salford City News led with a vow to back the community under the headline ‘Standing up for Salford’.

Sports editor Adam Lord leads the coverage of Salford Red Devils and Salford City FC, while chief reporter Jamie Bowman and reporter Daniel Hopkins lead the news content for the title.
