9 Ways to Make Time for Meditation as a Parent

When you’ve got kids, finding time for meditation can be a challenge, but it’s not impossible.

Meditation is a solitary activity. It takes time, even if it’s just a few minutes. It requires focus. And as a parent, time, focus, and solitude are often in short supply.

You might be able to get two out of three at once, but getting all three at the same time can feel like winning the lottery.

When your kids are small, it’s easy to tell yourself you need to just wait until they’re a little older. As they get older and have after-school activities, birthday parties and playdates, you might shrug it off and decide you just need to wait until they’re grown.

But parents don’t have to put a meditation practice on hold. You just need to get a little creative with how and when you meditate.

I am not a morning person. I love to sleep until I absolutely have to get up. But when you’re pressed for time, getting up early is a good option for making time to meditate.

Remember that meditation doesn’t have to last for an hour. You can get up just 15 minutes early. Even 5–10 minutes can work.

You might even be surprised to find that getting up early to meditate, and meditating immediately upon waking, makes you feel better.

After a busy day, many parents are ready to fall into bed and pass out. Some barely stay awake long enough to put the kids to bed. But, just like waking up early, staying up a few minutes late can be a good way to fit in your meditation.

Again, you only need a few minutes. You can even do it in bed, sitting or lying down.

It can also be helpful to keep in mind that these two times of day (right before bed and upon waking) are the two times you’re least likely to be interrupted. With the kids asleep, and the early or relatively late hour, you’re unlikely to get a phone call or have someone knocking on your door.
