Amazon Prime is Ruining Your Children One Purchase At A Time

Lucid Nightmare — Amazongeddon

The trick to future proofing your little darlings is keeping your online purchases hidden from prying eyes.

In years gone by doctors got very good at killing patients. Until recently, going to the doctor was often far more risky than staying at home. The digital age isn’t killing patients, medical advances mean that the majority of us will live a long time. The digital age is killing patience and that’s far more worrying.

Today is Amazon Prime Day! Hooooray!

It used to be the case that if you wanted to buy something, you’d have to wait. Either wait for it to become available in your local shop, or wait until you had the finances to afford it. Waiting was an integral part of the childhood of many of us.

If you had pocket money and you saved up, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. Coveting an object with an intensity that hurt and then beginning the slow grind of saving. On occasion we may have got credit, we called them birthdays.

And then Amazon killed it.

It wasn’t only Amazon, but as it’s Amazon Prime Day they seem like the people holding the smoking gun.

It is a skill that children have to learn about waiting. There is famous psychology experiment that did the rounds as an advert on UK television not long ago.

You put one sweet (or piece of candy if you’re American) in front of a child and tell them they’re allowed to eat it. You then tell them if they can wait ten minutes, they’ll get double the amount.

In most cases you don’t get to the end of the sentence. The little buggers have ralfed down the first piece before you can explain about the second one. Children are bad at delaying gratification.
