Silver Heart Moments

a free verse poem

Within the breast of day
reside blessings, great and small.

If we are careful the minutes
will include them and we
can cling to them, celebrate them
…quickly! Before despair
chokes them blueish-black, silent.

I caught a few of them today,
quiet moments adrift in time,
silver clay molded into tiny hearts…
tonight I keep them
fisted tight within me.

We mold them into tiny hearts.
They tink against each other,
settling just under our skin.

I have a motif running through my life like a quiet underground current, a well of emotion just beneath the skin. I call these “silver heart moments.” These are the simple blessings of life that if we are not careful will slip right by us, unnoticed. I challenge you to begin looking for these moments, storing them up, to take out and turn in your fingers in the dark moments — see how the light is captured by them. Silver heart moments are treasures that will keep you warm in times of darkness, encouraged in times of disappointment, loved in times of loneliness.

Hold fast to the moments of positivity and joy in your life. Savor them. Cherish them. Cling to them. Build your life with them.
